The Real Problem: You Don't Know What You're Paying For

I've been deploying on Vercel for years. When I started, I thought it was simple: you push code, it deploys, done. But after scaling some projects, I realized most developers don't really understand what they're paying for.

It's not your fault. Vercel's dashboard is beautiful but unintuitive when you need to understand where your money goes.

Today I'm breaking down the 5 metrics that actually matter. And no, it's not just "how many requests."

1. Edge Requests: The First One You See

This is the most obvious but also the most misleading.

An Edge Request is every time someone makes a request to your application. Seems simple, right? Well, it's not.

Why it's misleading

Many developers think: "I have 100,000 users a month, that's 100,000 requests." Massive error.

A typical user generates multiple requests:

  • Initial HTML load
  • CSS and JS files
  • API calls
  • Assets (images, fonts)
  • Analytics
  • Background requests your app makes

One user can easily generate 50-100 requests without you knowing.

How to optimize it

The key is:

  • **Aggressive caching**: Use `Cache-Control` headers
  • **Deduplication**: SWR and React Query do this automatically
  • **Compression**: Vercel does it by default, but verify it's enabled

2. Data Transfer: The One That Grows Out of Control

This is my favorite because it's where many get surprised.

Data Transfer is the amount of data Vercel serves from your Edge Functions and from your origin. This is where small decisions have big consequences.

Real cases I've seen

Case 1: Unoptimized images

A developer was uploading 5MB PNG images. With 1,000 daily users, that quickly became gigabytes of transfer per month.

Solution: Next.js Image Optimization. Period.

Case 2: APIs returning too much data

An endpoint was returning 100 fields when you only needed 5. Multiply that by thousands of requests and you have a problem.

In Vercel's dashboard, go to Analytics and filter by Data Transfer. Identify which endpoints consume the most. Typically you'll find:

  • Uncompressed assets
  • APIs returning too much data
  • Webhooks executing more than necessary

3. Function Duration: The One Causing Spikes

This is where many developers lose money without realizing it.

Function Duration is how long your Serverless Functions are executing. And yes, every second counts.

The problem

A function that takes 30 seconds to execute is a function blocking resources. Vercel charges for that.

Typical culprits

It doesn't appear on your bill directly, but it affects your productivity and frustration.

Vercel charges for build minutes on higher plans. If your builds take 10 minutes and you deploy 50 times a month, that adds up quickly.

Optimizations

5. Database Requests: The One You Forget to Count

Every database query is execution time.

The N+1 Problem

You don't need to be an infrastructure expert to optimize these 5 metrics. Most improvements come from:

1. Understanding what's executing: Use the dashboard 2. Caching aggressively: Reduces requests 3. Optimizing payloads: Less data = less transfer 4. Parallelizing operations: Reduces duration 5. Monitoring continuously: Catch problems before they grow

Here's how I do it: every Friday I review my Vercel dashboard for 10 minutes. I look for anomalies. If I see a spike, I investigate. That's it.

Takeaway

Vercel is excellent for developers because it handles infrastructure. But that doesn't mean you can ignore how it works.

The 5 metrics that matter are Edge Requests, Data Transfer, Function Duration, Build Time, and Database Queries. Monitor them. Optimize them. Repeat.
